Adenoidectomy Adenoids are lymphoid tissue present in the back of the nose. They are physiologically more active between the ages of 4 to 7 years. Abnormal or excessive adenoidal growth usually occurs in children having nasal allergies. This interferes with normal facial growth and can result in abnormal breathing pattern, congestion, snoring, mouth breathing, sleep apnoea, eustachian tube dysfunction, otitis media, rhinosinusitis, facial growth abnormalities, reduced ability to smell and taste, swallowing and speech problems. An X ray nasopharynx with or without Endoscopy gives a clear picture of an enlargement and accordingly medical or surgical management is started. Medical management includes intranasal sprays and surgical management requires removal of adenoids under endoscopic vision with a microdebrider.
